My husband and I have been married for 14 years and have 3 kids. Most of our friends are in loveless marriages or divorced(we are still very much in love and go on dates). We decided to renew our vows with a Harlem Renaissance theme. I would appreciate any ideas. We are planning to do this on our 15th anniversary in April 2007. I am so excited, our first wedding was nice but small and a quicky(I was on leave from the Military and only had 24 days to plan). I dont want a huge cermoney this time but I do want it elegant and fun. HELP!
Welcome to the boards BrownRaven. Let me just tell you, I love your theme, it is awesome! The fact that you and your husband are very much in love after 14 years of marraige is truly a blessing. My wedding is coming up in November 2006, and I only hope and pray that we will have the same testimony after 14 years. Do you know where you are having your wedding? How many guests will be involved? How large will your bridal party be? You can definitely plan an elegant wedding that will be everything that you hope it will be.

Hello everyone...I plan on having the ceremony and the reception at the same place a reception hall. I was not sure if a wedding party was appropiate for a renewal. I am hoping for 75 guest. I was thinking of having framed pics of famous folks during that era like Billy Holiday, Cab Calloway and so on. What do you think? I am stumped after that.
Hi BrownRaven, I think that your theme with the Billie Holiday, Cab Calloway is awesome. You can also incorporate some poetry from that era. What color scheme did you have in mind?

Being an outsider I had no idea what this theme meant so I went and found out:
In the early 1900s, particularly in the 1920s, African-American literature, art, music, dance, and social commentary began to flourish in Harlem, a section of New York City. This African-American cultural movement became known as "The New Negro Movement" and later as the Harlem Renaissance. More than a literary movement, the Harlem Renaissance exalted the unique culture of African-Americans and redefined African-American expression. African-Americans were encouraged to celebrate their heritage.
The main factors contributing to the development of the Harlem Renaissance were African-American urban migration, trends toward experimentation throughout the country, and the rise of radical African-American intellectuals.
The Harlem Renaissance transformed African-American identity and history, but it also transformed American culture in general. Never before had so many Americans read the thoughts of African-Americans and embraced the African-American community's productions, expressions, and style.
Girl there is so much you can do with this theme...extract the information here, combine it with the ones you have already and break off running with that.
You took it deep and very informative. The Harlem Renaissance also ushered in the NAACP and the Urban League. I will have people of varied races at the renewal, how should I address these sensitve racial issues but still honor those two organizations and the people that lead them. Also any other ideas would be great!!! And thank you guys so far.
Girl I am not familiar with the NAACP...I am in the West Indies so that part of history did not affect me...but girl you sound like you need to doing some type of united nation thing...blending the melting pots....arounding it of for a "United Love theme".
I will do that. Just dont want to stray to far away from the original theme. But the united love sounds good. One other thing, my husband wants to include a casino like thing(Cotton Club). Now remember Harlem Renaissance is the theme. Would haveing casino type activities in another room of the reception hall be tacky? I dont know. I will go along with it if I could get some input from others. Thanks
hey ladies. i am new here. i am also doing my wedding theme harlem renassiance with a cotton club feel. i need your ideas. my colors r black, white, silver, and a lil' red.....i know that , that era was based on poetry, art, jazz. so i will be putting these elements into my wedding .... any ideas on where to put theme...also what should my bridesmaids wear?????
I am also renewing my vows after being happily married over 5 years, though no children... Our theme "After All Teh Time, Our Love Still Glows" (candlelight theme -- candles, candles and more candles everywhere!
