I hate Fruit Cake
Posted on: 09/12/2005 11:23 AM
I am from the VI. My fiance is from Jamaica. The wedding is going to be in Jamaica. Since I currently live in Florida I am unable to oversee everything. After talking with his mom abou the cake she told me that it will be a fruit cake. I do not like fruit cake and plus I thought fruit cake was for christmas. My mother is Dominican and shes like "fruit cake, no way". Is fruit cake a Jamaican tradition or is it rum cake (which I don't like either) lol. What should I do. It's not like I'm going to eat the entire cake, but I want to make sure that the cake is nice and something that I like. On top of that my fiance is a vegetarian so I need to incorporate a layer that he can eat. Help!!!

Girl I know what you mean...I hate fruit cake also and I think it is a christmas tradition, well at least here in the Bahamas, we have it for that time of year. Listen, tell your MIL to be you want to opt to have the top and middle layer vegetarian (which I think will only mean vegetable oil/butter)without fruits. The middle layer for you to cut at the reception and the top layer for the year after, the rest of the fruit cake she can share with the other guests, that way you get the best of both worlds.

I agree. Have a layer of cake that you can enjoy and have a layer or two with the fruit cake that can be shared and will keep the peace with your MIL.

Fruit cake?Yuck!Lol!I would suggest telling you MIL that you dont want it as you wedding cake but you would like to have it at the reception as one of the desserts. Then you have the best of both worlds, a cake that you really want and she can still have the fruit cake.
Born Blessed!

I tell you family and future in-laws can be pains in the butt. I agree with both Platinum and Charlotte, but unfortunately it can only be Platinum's way or Charlotte's. Best of Luck!
Blessed be the Lord my strength ......

[LOL] Great to have you torilyric. Why are you getting married in Jamaica nad not at home in the VI???? You need a crop a blows. [grin] Do you mean black cake when you say Fruit cake? I used to HATE it. But I did like it as a wedding cake. I think the marzipan cut the super fruit acidy taste of it. Maybe you can try a sample before they make you eat ANY of it!

I agree with Rosetta, everybody may have a different version of "Fruit Cake"...I know over here it looks more like dark christmas pudding with those fruit peels that were marinating all year and now taste like plastic....man I hate them, but check out what other people have to offer....there version may be totally different where the fruit is only used as a garnish.

Hmmm... First, good luck! Dealing with in-laws can be tricky.
Even if you can't be there to tend to details, the people doing that for you should be concerned with your interests. I'm curious to hear your husband-to-be's take on the cake situation.
I think I would GRACIOUSLY decline to have fruitcake for the wedding cake, but tell your M-I-L that you would LOVE (yes, say that) to have it as a reception dessert or even as the "Groom's cake." It seems like the trend is toward *traditional* wedding cakes and chocolate or other flavors for Groom's cakes, so a locally flavored fruitcake may not be a bad idea in the right-for-you context.

I don't know what y'all mean - I love me some black cake!! But seriously - if you are having a couple of layers to your cake, why don't you have a small layer of the cake as fruit cake and the rest in a flavour that you like. Remember, you need to have your own stamp on this wedding - it isn't mother in law that's getting married, it's you!!

I agree wirh diamondbride black/fruit cake is the ish.You probably didn't have a real jamaican that knows what they are doing make it for you. My family is from jamaica and my grandmother who is a retiered cook at a jamaican resterant make the best black cake. As one of my favors to my guest at my wedding I am putting a piece of her black cake in little boxes with a bow and giving it away along with something else. But I do agree with everyone else Your day your way do what suits you. Good luck.
