Ok, Olga, I understand what your FH is saying but the reality is, sometimes renting a wedding gown could be costly. You could pay just as much for the gown because you have to pay to alter the gown and to professionally dry clean the gown by someone who specializes in wedding gowns.

It's recommended to buy your wedding gown because it's a nice tradition of saving it for your daughter or daughter-in-law to get married in one day, or any other member of your family. Remember that all things borrowed and worn on your wedding day is considered good luck. And besides, why would you want to rent a wedding gown for? You would be so appehensive all night because you'd be affraid if something spilled on it that you'd have to pay the price of the gown. You wouldn't be able to relax in it. When you buy your gown, it's yours and if something spills on it, you take it to the dry cleaners and have it cleaned and preserved. That's my 2 cents on the subject. What do you ladies think on this subject?

I would do all the research for renting/hiring a dress for a day, and weigh your options....In some cases, renting/hiring one can be more than simply buying. I think renting one is better if you are trying to wear a $5,000 or more gown-for the sake of it, but can't afford the dress. I have seen girls spend 400.00-500.00 to rent a gown that is worth like 7000.00 or more because they wanted to say they had it...With all the dresses costing as little as 99.00, its hard to justify the need to rent one nowadays...

True indeed, my wedding dress is just sitting in my closet, but I always smile when I look at it, and yes I spent 550 (+ another 300 for alterations) but it was a great investment for one of my proudest moments...You can always sell it on ebay or Craigslist if you want to get some or all of your money back after the wedding:) My dress was purchased from a friends bridal boutique, and in Davids Bridal-a knockoff version of my dress was over 800.00 in March of 2007 when I got married, so being that I still see they are selling it, I may put it on ebay and can get a few hundred...if I wanted to....

I am not a dress person so I personally felt no attachment what so ever to my dress. I would have been just fine renting one if I could have. I am/was however very attached to my veil, tiara and other accesories. I use to joke with my friends all the time and say "don't be surprised if i show up in jeans and a veil". I laugh when I watch my video cause you can see me at certain points struggling with the dress and you can see the annoyance on my face with tugging all that material. My dress is balled up in a trash bag at the bottom of my closet but my veil is hung up nice and pretty. Weird huh ?

Pam you are a trip...Its the opposite for me...I lent out my veil, and my tiara/headband....thats another story!

But my dress is hanging in the front of my closet....I think I may put it on again just for fun...I am in looooovvveeee with my dress....But I better do it while DH is not home....He may think I have COMPLETELY lost it....I already walk around with wild hair since going natural.....

I agree with Bumblebeekee on this one. If the dress is too pricey to buy, then I would make accomodations to rent it. I, myself had that same talk with my FH and he told me to try to rent it. I politely told him that buying my dream dress is what I've always wanted to do and that there are not many shops that even rent them here. I think you can still get what you want whether you rent or buy your dress and I think it just depends on your style, what you're looking for, and what's available when you go to look.

I agree with Bumble in that if you are trying to wear something like a $10,000 dress, then you might consider renting it. I know of someone who did this. But if not, then you could purchase a nice dress that only you have worn. And like Bumble said you can always sell it on ebay or something if you have no attachment or desire to keep the dress.

I spent a couple grand on my dress, but it is something that I will keep and treasure. Even if my future daughter doesn't wear it, I will always have it as a reminder of my wedding day. Also, there are a lot of companies that do gown preservation for as little as $100, so I'm probably going to do that.

But in the end, it's a matter of what's important to you.

I bought my dress for 1200 and I will preserve it for $100. I am passing it on to one of my daughters. Hopefully they will chose to wear it but it will be up to them. I think if you feel comfortable wearing something someone else has worn then go for it. But if you want something that can be passed down then go head and buy it.

well, I purchased my dress-and it is hanging in my closet; I don't have a daughter to pass it on to, and I am sure if my son gets married she will not want to wear her fmil's dress :) I am not doing anything with the dress right now (even though it is taking up alot of room and dh is not complaining) but if and when I decide, I will either take it to a resale shop or ebay..

My first dress is in the closet in a box wrapped in plastic but i have two daughters and if they chose they can each have a dress you never know someone might actually want to wear it or buy it from you I love both of my dresses and when i look at my dress it takes me back to the day i married my king and although it was the craziest day ever i have great memories and i wouldnt change that for anything so buy the dress already it doesnt have to cost you alot and as our visisters have pointed out they are pretty cheap now and may be cheaper than renting.
