Posted on: 03/27/2008 01:20 AM
My hubby-to-be and I have decided to do a private exchanging of vows then a big reception. Any ideas as to how to go about this? Do we still do 1st dance & all as any other reception?

If you want to, you can and you should. At a reception, you want to have a great time. By the time it starts, memories of the ceremony often fade out, and people are ready to party-depending on the mood you set. My ceremony was beautiful, though I participated in the last 10-15 minutes of it. I had to see the video to even remember what happened. But the reception, we had a great time!

So go all out with your cake, your color scheme and theme. Do a first dance if you want! There are no rules in weddings anymore-except stay calm, and elegant, don't get wasted, and don't be a nasty bridezilla. Other than that-anything goes!

One of my friends did that. they got married privately but they had a big reception. She had a MOH come out and he had his Best Man, and their daughter was announced as the flower girl. She went all out, decorations, cake, flowers, favors etc. It was very nice and we all had a great time. she also had the first dance, father/daughter and mother/son dances.
So I say go for it girl. i am sure everyone will be happy to come out and celebrate you two's happiness

My fiancee and I are having a small family only ceremony (about 15-20 people) and everyone else is invited to the reception being held at a restaurant.
You should still do all the normal things a couple do at a reception- I don't see a reason to deviate from the standard unless there are some mitigating circumstances. HAVE FUN! CONGRATS!

I say have a blow out of a party at your reception. Do the first dance thing. Do the cake superbly!!! Have a ball!!!

I agree with the other ladies! it is more reason to celebrate! You and FH have had the "tender moments" together during the private vows, so by the time for the reception, it is party time! cake, first dance, throwing the bouquet etc!!! :)

Welcome Djalonaylor. It's your day so have it your way. Include whatever you want and pass on what you don't. It's all about You.
