How important is time to you?
Posted on: 03/16/2008 09:31 PM
I Love to start conversations so here is an important one: TIME!

I ran into a friend at publix, and asked her how a mutual friend's wedding went last weekend. I knew it would be over the top, beautiful, extravagant, especially since the bride's mother is a wedding planner. I knew that they had spent some big $$ on the wedding so of course I expected us to spend time talking about the extravagance of the wedding....
Her response: Everything was perfect except that it started 2 hours late...
Me: What time was it scheduled to start?
Her: 5:00 PM.....

Me: Eww...wow! What Happened?

Her: The make-up artist (me thinking: They hired one? The bride's sister just graduated from the make-up artist/facial school, her mom also sells Mary Kay) was 3 hours late...

I say thats sad, but I'm thinking, what is the reception place (The University Club with its 10,000 club membership, and 20K minimum) thinking and CHARGING for this lateness?

We go talk more about this almost perfect wedding, then go our seperate ways...

So I talk to DH later about the wedding, he's like, okay, I can only imagine the thoughts in my head waiting on you 2 hours at the alter standing there in my hot tux....I'm like I know, I can see your face all scrunced up sour-like...The DH is like, isn't that rude? I say I think so, but some brides really don't care, or don't think they have the power to have things go on time if they can...yet you can't help your wedding starting late because someone is late...But its make-up not like Hair, or Alterations, or the limo broke down right? I don't know....

So I'm basically wondering, thinking-yes, SOME things are beyond your control, but If it were me, I would have either did my make-up myself, and worked on everyone else's just in the name of time...

Should the audience eat cake? Would you try your best to make sure things get started on time?
Apparently this make-up person got there over an hour after the wedding was supposed to start (when she should have been over an hour BEFORE)...Would you wait on her-even if she did get lost?

what would you do? How would you feel if you were a guest?

How important is time to you?

Well Bumble I must say no one is gonna make me late for my big day and live to tell about it. So to avoid killing anyone I would have gladly done my make up myself and kept on trucking. What happened to the mom and sister? thier in the makeup business you mean one of them couldn't pick up a makeup brush and powder her up real quick.

If I was a guest, yes I would of been upset. Two hours is a long time. I can get a lot of things done in two hours. I feel sorry for her DH the poor thing was probably wondering what in the world was going on. If I was her I would not even tell anyone thats the reason I was 2 whole hours late. would be ashamed to let anyone know getting my face done was more important then meeting FH at the alter.

Being on time is important to me because time is money, and as much money as FH and I are spending on this wedding I might sleep in the venue the night before just to make sure im on time. lol J/K but for real though God willing I will not be late on my wedding day.

I agree wholeheartedly with sensationablyhappy. Be that her mom is a Wedding Planner, why didn't she treat her daughter's wedding as though it was a job? Would she allow her client to be 2 hours late because a makeup artist decides not to show up on time? What backup plans did she have? Why didn't she apply her daughter's makeup herself? And the sister, you said that she just graduated from the same line of work, why didn't she, after waiting 15 minutes decide to do everyone's makeup for them? I agree also not to mention the reason for the lateness because if anyone got a wind of the reason why, it could be devastating for the mother's business. NO ONE IS GOING TO MAKE ME LATE FOR MY WEDDING DAY!!! Noone and nothing!!!

I heard that! I agree with you both and I am GLAD you brides are working to have a timely affair:)
After watching Bridezilla show you'd think all brides would have a "Let them Eat Cake!" Attitude:) Especially since many brides often think they are the Queen of the World on your wedding day...And you are....well Queen of the Wedding...However, even the Queen of England makes it her duty to be prompt as much as possible....And as a Queen myself, NO ONE makes this Queen wait, so I would have happily told her on the phone to stay home, and I will be keeping her check:)

I agree. I'm a truck driver so (1) Time is money to me. If I'm going to get penalized for late deliveries (some places fine drivers up to $300 or make you reschedule), then I make sure that I deliver ON TIME. So, if the venue charges for late events, I would have had to improvise with the makeup. I would have to do it myself or get a family to help. I wouldn't have waited on the makeup artistand she wouldn't receive a dime from me. If she was paid in advance, she would have to give me a refund!

If I was a guest, I would have been irritated. (2)I'm a stickler for time. I did everything to ensure that I arrived to the wedding early, the least they could do is make sure that it starts on time. Lol!

AMEN! We're Queens, but we can't be bridezillas. I know this girl, and would have been a little sympathetic to her. Her personality is not that of a bridezilla at all (though some lateness of many brides is because they ARE!) and I think she might have just waited cause she thought she should, or her mom may have told her to also. Plus, if they already paid the chick, they may have waited. Her mom isn't an "all-star" coordinator so I can imagine a little poor planning, and lack of a back-up caused the lateness too...but what does that mean to your average guest?!?!

I think time means EVERYTHING to me. Why bother with telling everuone what TIME your ceremony starts or what TIME your reception is, or what TIME to show up for rehearsal if time isn't important. If that's the case people should be saying "we'll be starting AROUND, MAYBE, UH...3 MAYBE 4- come when you get ready...." LMAO! Can you imagine?! That would be the LOOOOOONGEST day(s) of your life.

Our wedding started about 15 minutes late, which is great because that's VI time. LOL! Yet, there are so many photos of hubby and his groomsmen looking at their watches just because that was "one" of the photos I wrote on our photo checklist. There's even one with him looking at his watch and on his cell phone looking like he's calling me or something when really a friend was calling to say he was on his way. I loved our photographer, but now when anyone looks at the wedding photos, they're going to swear we were like 2 hours late. I think that was a joke on me.

My hubby was 1 and a half hours late for my wedding. My bridesmaids his nieces started getting DRESSED at 4PM when my wedding was to start. My family is EARLY for everything. It was so irritating and embarrassing. I was HEATED to say the least as I walked down the aisle. The people for my side were sitting in the cathedral early and his side was EMPTY unit about 4:15 I heard.

That family has been 2 hours late for every party, dinner, outing or whatever they plan or we plan so I just tell them things start 2 hours before they do. They still come late, but only about a half hour. LOL

I've read that there's also a practice to write on the invitation that the ceremony starts at say 4:00 p.m. but really it starts at 4:30 p.m. just to give everyone time to get there and get seated. I think I read that in a magazine or one of my wedding planning books. Have you all ever heard about that? What do you think?

Yes, one of the brides I'm working with now ...wanted to do that. I advised against it. If they are there GREAT if not ...oh well. It would be so unfair to the on time guest, and the early ones would have have to suffer too.

On the invites we put: "promptly at 10:30 AM", but truthfully I am blessed because about 99% of guests were on time from what I was TOLD. When I was walking out, we saw a couple of our friends standing outside because they got the doors closed on them. But they thought the invite said 11AM so they misread it.

I think that like Rosie said, KNOW your audience and set the time accordingly. I probably would have told the guests an hour or so earlier too if I knew they were 2 hours late. At my brother's wedding it started 30 minutes late because the bride's father and stepmom arrived so late, and she wouldn't walk down the aisle without him. But supposedly this minister from Nigeria has a reputation for being late (her dad). Anyhoo that would have been okay had the AC been working. Standing in sweaty strappy 3-4 inch sandles while sliding down forward in them until your little piggies turn blue is NOT CUTE!

I was very upset that my day did not start on time. we started about an hour late. everything moved on time until we got to the venue. even with the license being left at the house, we were still in good timing.me and DH are usually the late ones for everything but this day we were on time and ready. well it was the Pastor who held up the ceremony, instead of coming to rehearsal as he should have to look over the documents at that time, making sure everything was correct, he takes an hour to review it when the ceremony should have started. i was so heated, in tears and all. maybe that's why i wasn't all teary eyed during my vows. lol
