Is anyone having an reception with just the children in the wedding party there? That's what we are doing and I told some of the guest that we plan to invite, and of course I got attitude from some folks. Sorry, but we are paying per person. Mrs Moose loves the kids, but I can't afford to pay for them to mess over food. Tell me what you ladies think.
I just went to an adult only reception. I thought it was fine. I think that people have to take into consideration that you want to share a special day in your life with them and they should honor your wishes. But that is just my opinion. :)
I don't think it is a problem with it, but my reception will not be adults only; mainly because with me having a young one myself, I know it is sometimes hard to find sitters etc, plus my reception is also being held at the church which is full of kiddos!
We will be allowing kids at our reception. Although we will place a message in the invites letting them know that we prefer the adults only if at all possible.
My sister has 4 boys, I have 3 kids of my own, plus my future stepdaughter, and a good part of my guests have children. Kids do tend to waiste a lot of food, so I totally feel you on that MRSMOOSE.
One idea I thought of to save money is having a seperate section of tables and menu for the kids, like pizza, chicken wings,fries, or something like that. You know kids don't really care that their eating pizza instead. It is a touchy subject though and a lot of people do take it personal.
I am also having an adult only reception. Of the family members I have told so far, they have been completely ok with our decision to have no children. I'm sure there will be some who will have attitudes, and who will probably even show up with a child or two! My cousin had an adult only reception last October, and a few children showed up. Not sure if she was aware of this before hand or not. But anyways, we are sending our save-the-date cards out Mon., and have included some extra information, one being an enclosure stating-
"We ask that our wedding ceremony and reception be “Adult only”. Please honor our request for this special day and make any necessary arrangements in advance. Thank you for your understanding." This way, everyone, who doesn't already know, will know 6 months in advance, and will have the opportunity to make any necessary plans. We will also remind them again on the invitations! As you said mrsmoose, we are paying per person, and this is the best way for us to save money having such large families.
I am planning on have an adult only ceremony and reception. The only children that will be in attendance on that day will be mine. There is nothing worse then kids crying or talking while the ceremony is going on. I have been to alot of weddings in my time and the thought never crossed my mind to bring my children. I dont understand why people get mad when you say adults only.
Ok Housewife, now you got me thinking! I was so much more focused on them attending the reception that it didn't even cross my mind about someones child disturbing the ceremony......HMMMMMMMMM, I might have to go back to the drawing board! There's nothing like a screaming child while your trying to say your vows or something! EWWWWWW the thought of it just makes me cringe!!
It is too expensive for me to have kids at the reception. I'm one of a few that only has 2 or fewer children. My people all have 4 or more! Kids will outnumber the adults! I am renting a suite for my children and having a babysitter there for them. They will leave the reception after dinner. There are about 5 more slots available to join them but the parents have to negotiate the fee with the sitter!
My invitations stated adult reception and the only children we allowed were our children and the children of people in our bridal party. They all sat at one table that I stategically placed directly in front of the headtable with my parents table on one side of it and his parents table on the other. I wasn't really worried about behavior problems because normally our group of kids are well behaved but just in case they showed out the were reachable from all sides. They could get yanked up from any direction..LOl
Our venue separated our costs for reception. We had one fee for children, one for teens, one for adults and another for vendors. The children were served chicken tenders. The teens had same meal options as adults but since they can't drink, the price was cheaper than adult meal price which included open bar. Vendors ate cheapest of everyone.

Having been to receptions with kids and ones without, I personally will opt for the latter. Kids are sure to get cranky some time during the function and their tantrums may end up causing chaos.
But like Niki highlighted some guests might not appreciate being told to leave their kids at home. And while some may opt to stay away others end up bringing the kids along. A case in hand being a friend's reception where a couple of guests who brought along their offspring were not happy about having their kids sit on their laps because there were no seating available for kids.
However it being your special day, I believe that you should settle for what makes you happy and deal with the naysayers after.
I'm planning on doing the same thing. For the wedding I will pay someone to watch the kids in the church nursery. For the reception I haven't quite decided yet, but I'm thinking that I may have the parents work out the babysitting costs or find somebody who will do a fee per child situation and then order a few pizzas for them and thats it.

If someone brings there children I hope they are feed before they come, because someone is not eating, now either it will be the parent or the child, because I refuse to pay for another plate.
House, I know that's right!!! We did decide to have a one of my teenage nieces help with the little ones in the bridal party. The only one I'm worried about getting out of hand is the daughter of my MOH. She is 3 going on 31. All the rest are pretty well behaved. They go to church with grandmom every sunday, and they know if the get out of hand mom-mom will give the evil eye and they'll get it together! :))

My family is huge and so is his. We've decided not to have an Adult only reception as nearly all of our guests will be coming from one part of the country to another. I'm from the Carribean and we're having a buffet style reception. There will be plenty of food and besides, I want my reception lively and I want the children of our family to celebrate our union as well.
It is so refreshing to see women in a forum discuss having an adult only reception without any criticisms. I've been to one other messageboard where you cant mention Adults Only without somebody going off.
Since my wedding will be during the afternoon and I'm not serving alcohol in order to cut costs, I'll allow children. My venue is a recreation center *It's actually a very nice and classy place* with plenty of running room outside for the children to play. I'm thinking about getting some green and white balls *my wedding colors* and coloring books to keep the kids occupied.
Perfect advice Niki. We had an adult only reception with a nanny in a separate room with games and things for the children under 12. It was like they had their own party.
