I just (and I mean just in the past couple hours) decided that I want to do a jazz brunch theme for my reception. Has anyone ever been to one of those at like an upscale soul food restaurant? Or does anyone have any ideas as to how to incorporate that theme through the ceremony and reception aside from having a jazz band and brunch food? My wedding colors are pink and green.

Hey Ivy, i don't have any ideas but there was another bride who had a jazz-themed reception sometime last year. Search the forums with keywords and you might come across a goldmine. Sorry i couldn't be of more help.

Sorry ladies, but I'm not feeling that centerpiece. To me it looks like something a child made in school. Just my opinion though.
Ivyprincess when I think of jazz I think of relaxation; so for me, with a jazz theme, less is more. I would do floral centerpieces and lots of candles, jazz cd's for favors and instead of numbering my tables, I would give each table a jazz inspired name. You could name a table after your favorite jazz musicians, favorite jazz songs, etc.
Also since jazz makes me think of deep colors like black and gold, and since your colors are pink & green, I would incorporate deeper shades of the pink in my centerpieces. Maybe a silver vase with soft pink, dark pink and champagne colored roses.
The key to me is keeping it simple so the mind can relax and enjoy the music.

Pam, i think there's a big difference between smooth jazz (which you seem to be describing) and New Orleans jazz (which fits the style of that centerpiece)
Muskina I agree there is a big difference but in Ivy's other posts she already said relaxed theme, springy, lots of flowers, country club, upscale restaurant.
If she was going more for New Orleans jazz, even MardiGras, yes that "style" of centerpiece fits but that particular centerpiece....I'm not feeling it.

What I'm thinking of is more like a mixture between the two extremes. I like the idea of Mardi Gras jazz and the fun that it puts you in the mind of. But I'm not really interested in the really bold bright colors and things theat are associated with it. I like relaxation of soft jazz and things like that. I just don't want a reception that is boring or stuffy, where people won't get up and dance etc. (especially since there won't be a lot of liqour there loosening people up)
So I don't really know, I'm more fleshing the idea out than anything else.

ANother way to follow the theme throught the reception are those little details....Say if you used a trumpet or saxaphone, or even a musical note as your "logo" you can put it on the invites, the menus, and any other stationary you have. I am sure you can get any company to do this for you. Even those magnetic save-the dates can be done with a musical theme. If you go with Mardi Gras, you can have hostesses give everyone their pink and green beads at the table as favors for example.
I like the idea of each table being identified with a musician (Simply frame the musician or group's name) and at the entry table for example, guest such ans such would be sitting at the Brandford Marsalis or Billy Holiday, or BB King table.... I also like the idea someone else mentioned that favors can be little CD's of your favorite Jazz Songs...I am sure you can find a nice cover with a Jazz feel to print the CD's with...You can even get a cake done with some musical notes, not too gaudy though....
I would start by giving yourself a little history lesson on Jazz history and its roots in the South, famous Jazz Songs, cities such as New Orleans, Memphis, New York City that have very deep Jazz Roots. Once you are comfortable with the culture and its African Roots and the lingo, you will find how easy it is to get those details covered as far as you favors, centerpeices, invites, etc done....

Okay I guess I am getting into this....Jazz was really big in the 1920's pre-depression era going into the 1950's...Think of lots of Jazz artists in black and white photos, the women in the flapper dresses and those cute bell-shaped hats...Your dress could be a silk-close-fitting number and for hair, think sleek-smooth, simple, with a flower on the side like Billie Holiday...Also those long beads too.
Think of the women with red lipstick and those deepwaves....I'm just trying to give you a visual picture here.
I definitely agree with the other ladies with less being more, so if you want to do a tall beautiful vase with a simple red or pink rose in it thats cool too. Whatever you decide is great....
Excellent, Excellent, Excellet advice. I was going to jump out the window and provide info on more of a madi gras theme, but you did a wonderful job simplifying an elegant jazz theme.
I would love to have a sleek, close fitting type dress, but I don't have the type of body that you need to be putting on sleek and close fitting, lol.

My ideas seem to be a lot like the ones on this blog, it will be an after five wedding, for about 90 people, tables named after famous jazz singers or muscians not alot of flowers mostly candles on tables .
