Congrats!
I am also newly engaged and checking out this website for the first time. It's nice to see a website that addresses the specific desires of African American couples! I have spent some time on theknot.com...but this is great!

Start with the basics. Date, time of day, location, budget, wedding party(who and how many people), and the rest will begin to fall into place.

You should Start planning with these articles, Mocha D. phenomonique you are right oin point. Get your date straight. Then lock down the officiant (priest), Location of ceremony anf\d the reception. THEN buy your invites. Ya heard me! Get those out of the way first. Then you buy all the other things like favors, floweres, decorations, etc. Your invites will help you set your wedding theme. Welcome JSGirl and CONGRATS!!!!! You will find any and everything you need right here on ViBride. Whether it's advice, items you need, questions, etc - we're here for you. IMO, you should first pick a date. Then, contact different venues that interest you and get quotes on pricing. Narror your choices down and then get the deposit on your place. It's not too early to start booking places. I booked my venue Feb '06 and I'm not getting married until Sept '07. You'll find that you'll get good bargains (current pricing) this year oppose to waiting until '08 or '09 to book vendors. ARe you going to have a church ceremony and then a separate reception or everything at one place? Do you want a small or large wedding? Pick out colors also.

Oh, and there's a lot of us that's on during working hours - shhhh don't tell the boss.

Welcome JS,
step one-listen to all of the wonderful advice that you'll receive here!
Don't worry about how far away the wedding seems, I was proposed to 1/1/06 and I never thought my day would come, and here it is only three months away, and here I am wishing I had more time...LOL

Welcome JSGirl! Congratulations on your engagement. The first thing you should do is pick a date and then set a budget. You may then think about what kind of wedding you want, i.e. destination wedding, outside, size, etc. The ladies here are absolutely amazing.

Welcome Kizzy1D!
First off welcome and congratulations on your engagement.
I'm confused with your request, do you mean that some people are offering advice that you don't want to hear/don't like?

Welcome to all the new brides! You will find ALOT of helpful information, support and comedy on this website. Just like others have said, the first thing is to figure out a budget, you might end up spending a little more or even a little less, but just have something you can work with. The next thing is to book your reception site and wedding site because sometimes if they are not in the same place it might take a little shuffling around to get both places on the same date. Then of course after that look into booking your photograher, honeymoon plans, hair stylist, make up artist etc, anybody or anything that has to be "booked" or I knew I would need some time to pay on I took care of that first.

I can't believe I found this website! My friends are already tired of hearing me talk about my wedding (none of them are married) and my family is driving me crazy. Everyday I think about calling the whole thing off (only a few deposits submitted) and going to the justice of the peace! I got engaged in February and I'm just starting to get in gear with my engagement party. Did anyone have an engagement party? Any suggestions?

Welcome to the site and congrats. I didn't have an engagement party, so I won't be of much help. Have you started planning anything yet?

Welcome to the boards FMrsRoberts! Good to have new 'faces' round here. Didn't have an engagement party, but I just got back into to town from my girlfrinds E-party. It was an informal cook out, and it turned out sooo beautiful. LOW-KEY is the key.

Yes he was talking about crack LOL... but the rules still apply. This is your wedding and the motto for the day is "your day your way" I'm sorry you've been going through this. Do you girl.

Welcome to all of the new brides!

FMrsRoberts, My FMIL (future mother-in-law for the newbies) planned our engagement party. All I had to do was come up with a guest list and show up. It was at a beautiful hall but was really simple and full of love. Good luck!

Our wedding date is September 6, 2008! I'm in a rush to get going with the planning because I will be out of the country from Sept 2007 until January 2008.

I hate to admit this, but planning this thing is not fun! I'm the first person in my family to have a wedding, and so no one could warn me about the pressure and issues that are aring. My mother is about to drive me CRAZY, my FH has no idea how stressful the process is, and my friends don't seem that interested in helping me! Lord knows when I have a child, I will do what I can to make the process pleasant and stress-free!

Relax, relate, release!

FMRsRoberts, don't stress yourself more than necessary. I know we all want to have our dream wedding and we sometimes overthink every little detail. You have more than enough time to have everything the way you want - even if you don't do anything until January. True, the more time the better, but not at the risk of your sanity or health. Focus on the things you can control right now. It will get easier. You have all of our support.
