Those Publix cakes!
Posted on: 06/27/2006 08:04 PM
I just talked to the Bakery manager at a Publix in Orlando and she told me that they charge by size and not design which is why they are cheaper. What I learned is that I can pay $419.00 for a 4-tiered cake for 150-200 people OR I can pay $167.00 for a 3 tiered cake for the cake table, then buy a large sheet cake (serves 80) for $59.00 -that can be served from the kitchen (who's really watching all that cake get sliced and served?)-Saving me almost $200.00.
AND today, my wedding coordinator said that I may not even have to buy the sheet cake, because most people don't stay that long, and that typically you need to buy enough cake to serve 70-80% of your guests!

They charge 30.00 to deliver and set up your cake if its less than I think 10-20 miles, and then the price for that goes up. You only need about a month (they said thats all the time in advance you need to order-unless you order their toppers-then its longer), and then pay a week in advane-but I am going 2 months prior to order...
You also need to pay for your own pillars(separators)
So many ways to save!

TIP: We are close to getting a cermony/reception site, so if we chose this site, we found a Publix thats 1.5 miles from the hotel cause we don't live in Orlando. Consider this when finding a place to deliver your cake if you don't live in that city you'll get married in.

I haven't seen about Wal Mart or Albertsons...I will check though...I've never eaten one from there either....I did taste Winn Dixe. It was pretty good. But they both have to deliver & set-up before I buy.

The only thing I need to find out is how much it would cost to do different flavors for each layer....I was thinking of doing yellow for one layer and maybe Marble for the other layer....Then for our top layer do chocolate or white chocolate.....Does anyone know for sure of Publix will do this?

All you have to do is call the actual Publix that is going to do your cake- Some might have different responses than others...or next time you're in Publix, take a stroll to the Bakery & talk to one of the chefs.

A friend of mine lives in Tennesse and she is getting married in March, she didnt want to get her cake from publix and picked some very expensive bakery that is charging her 900 dollars. After I showed her the designs that publix have I bet she will be getting a cake from them now. I wish it was a publix where I live at.

I too am weighing my options as far as getting my cake from publix. There is one within 15 min of my house. I saw some cakes on thier website that i really like and they are much more "cost effective" than the ones from a bakery. I may end up getting one:

Its my understanding that Publix will accept any design you put forth and they will let you know if they can do it....Also if you want to mix or alter one of their own designs you can...So if you like a cake but you want less flowers, a different piping design, different colors with the same designs or maybe you want a design they have as a square to be round, they will do it.
Don't create a design or bring in a picture thats too too complicated because not all publix bakeries have actual pastry chef's or designers, so it varies...All in all, they will work with you. I did find out that they WILL do different layers in different flavors.

I am getting a cake with my reception hall. It has a lavender ribbon around it and it will serve my 100 guests. I also plan to have a dessert table (costs extra) so that my guests will have a choice.

I just checked out Publix's website, and I fell in love with 3 cakes!!
But, given the info that BumbleBee shared about not needing that much cake, it helps me narrow my decision down. But I love the ones with the seperate tiers. I wish I knew how to post pics...I need your opinion!!!

Okay I am mad! Publix just came out with some new, beautiful cakes...My favorite newer one is "Sweethearts forever". I did "Our first dance" as my own wedding cake, and it looked even better in reality on my wedding day....I saw the "Sweethearts Forever" at publix the other day but the one displayed actually was all-white and the hearts were in red....it was very beautiful....You can change the color of the icing, any decoration, and flowers at publix too, thats why I like them.

Bumble-this is my cake decor (our first dance) but I am having the silver initals on top
I think I want the flowers to be the pistachio but the bakery said it may be hard to match my color :(
but hey! don't be mad...your anniversary is coming up soon! get the Sweetheart cake then and have a celebration with just you and DH! :)

True that! Good choice in cake by the way! In reality, the flowers on the cake looked a little bigger (if you look at my wedding pictures posted under "Bumblebee's Pics"-which I LOVED....

We used the silver intertwining hearts as our cake topper because we used that to create our theme for the wedding...we put the logo on the invites, programs, favors, and some other things. We couldn't decide on a caketopper shaped like a couple or whatever...

well I wish there was a Publix in Dallas because I am paying over $400 for my cake! :( but it's cool because I thought about ordering from Wal-mart, but they don't setup and deliver and because I want all of the layers stacked the lady that is doing my food etc didn't really feel comfortable transporting the cake and being responsible for making sure it is setup correctly so I guess you have to pay for what you want...
