Indian Wedding Ceremony

Marriages, it is said, are made in heaven, but the right choice has to be finalized here on earth. To find the perfect partner, one has to go through a good mediator but after one has found the perfect match, the task becomes all more daunting. In fact, in most houses the jewelry is bought years before a marriage is contemplated. To get everything in one place is something unheard of in a country where traditions require elaborate rituals and where marriage is still a long drawn affair and an auspicious get-together for extended family. In the fast-paced modern life, however, things are changing. People do not have time for elaborate rituals. They want to get married without spending too much time on the conduct of a marriage. And yet they do not want to compromise with the rituals. To get everything in one place so that they do not compromise with the essentials has become the heartfelt requirement of many.

The Parties

Types Of Indian weddings

Sikh
In a Sikh wedding, the pheras or circumambulations are taken around the Granth Sahib and quotations from this holy book are recited to celebrate a marriage which symbolizes the union of the soul and the supreme power. The Sikh bride wears a Wedding Pink Lehenga with an elaborate chunni to cover her head. Her jewelry is traditional. The bridegroom dons a traditional turban , traditional clothes and the give Ks required to be worn by every Sikh.


Muslim
In Muslim weddings, a Nikah is confirmed when the bride, through her agent, accepts the marriage proposal against her Mehr in front of the bridegroom, who also agrees to the marriage. The bride wears, gold embroidered garments- either a Salwar Kameez, a Sari, or a ghagra, depending on her preferences and family customs. She also dons a heavy, gold encrusted veil and jewelry of traditional designs. Intricate henna designs decorate her hands and feet. The bridegroom wears a sherwani and cap suited to his denomination.
